I provide development consultancy under the brand Hills Bede. This includes both developing complete products from scratch, advising on the scaling of existing ones as they grow in popularity and working as part of a larger team to develop new features for existing offerings.
I prefer working with startups both in the early stages of MVP development and as they gain traction and scale as they tend to align best with my preferred “ship fast an iterate” approach.
Where needed I’ll put together and manage a small team of other contractors and freelancers including developers and designers to deliver larger projects or work with existing internal teams.
Areas of Expertise
- Ruby on Rails (3.1 +)
- Infrastructure, particularly automating the deployment of Rails Server environments
- Postgresql, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis
- Arduino/ Pebble/ Embedded Devices
Below is a small selection of the projects I’ve worked on recently, for more details, get in touch
Active In Time
I currently primarily work as the Technical Lead at Active in Time, the company behind the Speedo Fit swimming app and the timetabling for a large proportion of the UK’s leisure operators. This involves the development and maintenance of several high traffic Ruby on Rails applications and associated infrastructure which serve a (very!) rapidly expanding base of mobile and web based users in the UK, China and France.
Shop of Me
Hosted on a mixture of Linode and Rackspace VPS nodes and using chef for provisioning we can deploy new nodes with almost no human intervention and easily switch existing nodes between frontend servers and backend processing depending on load conditions.
Nearest 2 The Pin
With design from the ever talented Tom Ross, Nearest2ThePin provides an intuitive and simple way for golfers to find new partners and organise rounds with them. A rails 3.2 application, backed by Postgresql and Redis.
I was lucky enough to work with the guys at Dynamic 50 on the ongoing maintenance and improvement of The Couple Connection and The Parent Connection, websites run by the none governmental organisation One Plus One. This comprised mainly developing new features for the Mongo DB backed Rails 3 applications both as part of the existing system and as a new mounted engines.
In partnership with Topcat Metrology I developed the Python based software and Arduino based hardware interface for their Mousemet Electronic Von Frey a measurement tool used by veterinary researchers internationally on the patent for which I’m a named author.
Get in Touch
I’m based primarily in Google Campus in London. Time spent chatting with interesting people over a coffee or a beer is never time wasted so if you’re involved in something interesting, get in touch – first round’s on me.
